Personal Growth
By Gary Daly
Some people don’t know where to start to goal set for the New Year. Why? Some may be feeling low or overwhelmed about the year ahead. Perhaps they didn't have a great year in 2012 and are predicting the same results for the year ahead. I've been there and have learned these feelings don’t last forever. They eventually went away for me as I put into practice ideas from some of my teachers and will share a little of what I learned. Here is one way to change the situation quickly – effective goal setting. You can be successful in 2013 even if you can’t think of a single goal to write down at the moment.
Don’t worry, this one lesson will allow you to feel more peaceful, happy, centered and above all else, have a feeling of belonging. What do I mean by belonging? It is feeling a sense of contribution to life, that something you did, no matter how big or small in 2012, was meaningful. You matter, yes that means you! So what if you didn't win an Olympic medal in 2012. Look back and see where you made a difference in another’s life. Then notice where you grew as a person; it all counts. Why? Because ordinary things done consistently, lead to extraordinary results!
Whenever I write about how to set goals it is either based in the present or the future, but I have never mentioned the past….until now. I was reading an interesting extract recently from Mark Waldman, one of the Worlds’ leading experts on spirituality and the brain. I have learned a lot from this teacher. What I discovered from Mark is that in order to get the most out of 2013, we must do a 2012 accomplishment review. What does this mean? It means before we start panicking about what to write down for our 2013 goals, we need to make a comprehensive list of all of our successes or goals achieved from 2012. It can be done by each month or simply by thinking of goals you achieved and jotting them down on a piece of paper.
The goals can be little things as well as accomplishments. This can be a list of things you did well – maybe running a half marathon or finishing a really big project at home or work? Moments of joy – maybe your friend got engaged or you visited a new country? Money you made –maybe you got a promotion in work this year? A present you gave someone which surprised or even made someone tear with joy!
Any success is a success, be it big or small. A compliment given to you from someone – maybe you gave your seat up to an elderly person on the bus or helped a mother carry her baby’s pram off the train? Have you become closer to a friend or even made new friends?
Mark Waldman says that while you write all of this down, it is helpful to take a slow, deep, controlled breaths in and out, to release stress and tension within, as you become aware of how this achievement makes you feel inside. I completed my own 2012 accomplishment review recently and it feels very liberating. You may be as surprised as I was to see how many accomplishments I had on my list.
What does all this have to do with setting goals? According to Mark, our brains are designed to memorize each and any small disappointment or failure. I often hear sports stars say that they always remember their failures more so than their successes. These are times when they felt more hurt than they felt sheer joy. The brain was built to register these moments rather than our successes.
Over the years we build unconscious stashes of fear, worry and doubt. It is very important to consciously writing down the positives from our life as it builds neurological confidence and psychological self-confidence. It also trains the motivational circuits of our brains to become more successful and happy.
When you set goals for 2013 look further than things you want to accomplish. Review your previous wins from 2012 and it will boost confidence to take action to make your new goals a reality. Happy New Year to everyone!
