Spring 2011

School of Life

"I look at life as if it were a school. I remember that I am here to learn and grow, to become fully aware of who and what I am. I see the challenges that come my way as part of the curriculum that I signed up for at the spiritual level of my being. Rather than criticize, deny, or avoid my problems, I see them as opportunities for growth. I am in the school of life and learn from every experience."

Greetings from the Editor:

Finally

I am happy to say, Simple Secrets for Building Self-Esteem and Finding Your True Self, is hot off the press. This short little mini-book summarizes things I practice in healing my own self-esteem and finding my Self.

Many years ago I followed my husband on a career transfer to Thibodaux, LA. While there I worked at Nichols State University as a counselor and taught a student development course. Here was my first exposure to self-esteem by a book used in the class, Building Self-Esteem by L.S. Barksdale. It was life altering. When I moved back to Houston, I began teaching self-esteem classes with Leisure Learning Unlimited in 1981. At first I learned as much as the students in each class as we entered into deep philosophical discussions. Over time I developed an expertise in facilitating others to heal self-esteem issues. It brings me great joy to have the information in a nutshell of a book. May this information travel easily into the hands of many and help heal the world one person at a time.

Fortunate Blessings,

Suzanne

Self-Awareness

Suffering Exists:
How Some Suffer Less Than Others

By Suzanne E. Harrill

Suffering is part of the human condition. We can't avoid it. Have you noticed that some people suffer more even with the same or less dramatic issues than others? Those that suffer less have made a shift in perspective away from victimhood to seeing a larger picture. They practice expanding their awareness to include knowing themselves, their real needs, and learning to meet them. Let me share a part of my early journey to illustrate this shift in consciousness necessary to shrink the amount of suffering you experience...

What is Depression?

By Gary Bates

Well, firstly, depression is a very misunderstood condition. It is not so much an illness but a natural, protective state. The depressed state of mind is very different from the so-called 'normal' state of mind, which exists in the presence of emotional feelings. But what happens when creativity is stifled and one's emotions get to 'overload' one's system?

Poetry

Dawn

By Lisa Thompson-Finlayson

This poem, inspired by Pachelbel Canon in D  Major, was written during my college days at Morgan State University and published in The Sable Quill in 1991.  My English professor put me on the Dean's student committee where we got together to talk about our college experiences.  When I learned the dean as a college student attended poetry readings, I invited him to a poetry reading through The English Club.  After the poetry reading, he encouraged us to put our poetry into book form. Thus, The Sable Quill was born...

Death Can Be Our Friend

By Mary O'Malley

My beloved kitty Misty passed away on Saturday after 19 years of sharing her loving presence with everyone she met. My groups all begin with a meditation (oftentimes with Misty sitting in her Buddha pose on the arm of the couch), and I loved to say that she was constantly delighted that at least some people in the world had learned how to be as quiet and meditative as a cat!

To have death so close reminds me that one of the best friends we have in life is death.  Now, don't leave me here...

The Chicken or the Egg:
Perspectives on the Attachment/Detachment Cycle

By Vicky Jeter

What is it about being human that keeps us questing after "meaning" in order that we may feel validated in living more fully? Why is it that "The Chicken, or the Egg" question can have the capacity to captivate our powers of rationale no matter how many times we've heard it? Why do we often sense with that unexplainable feeling that "the grass is greener on the other side of the hill?"
