Q & A Interview

Autumn 2014

Feelings

"My feelings are not right or wrong. I understand feelings are simply part of my inner guidance system. They give me feedback on thoughts and reactions to my daily experiences and encounters with others. I am learning to put words to what I’m feelings which helps me identify thoughts and beliefs behind the feelings. I acknowledge all my feelings. I always tell myself the truth about what I am feeling."

Greetings from the Editor:

The Cycle of Life

This past summer was very powerful for me and my family. It was a time to experience the depth of the human experience with the ups and downs of life with the full range of emotional intensity of joy, fun, sorrow, grief, sadness, laughter, and connectedness. I traveled to nine states, was on the west coast and the east coast twice. The summer began with two driving trips with my husband, a fun art week of plain air painting in the mountains of Creed Colorado and a drive from Denver to La Jolla, California for my niece’s beautiful, fun wedding. On the way we hiked in several beautiful national parks: Arches, Zion, Bryce Canyon, and Joshua Tree.

I loved the ocean walks and watching seals and sea otters while in La Jolla, California. Half way there, we learned that the father of the bride died, so the festive mood was bitter sweet. The memorial service was in Maryland. It was very beautiful and emotional. It was held in a state park and many family members participated in celebrating my brother-in-law's life. Add to this someone in the family was diagnosed with a health challenge, a close friend died, and my dear dog of 15 years died.

The absolute best part of my summer was the birth of my daughter Sarah’s first child. A healthy boy, our fifth grandchild. This beautiful baby brings us back full circle to what life holds for us. May each of us be fully present when life experiences find their way onto our life path. The full emotional experience is a part of what being human is all about. I wouldn’t want to miss any of it. Would you?

Fortunate Blessings,

Suzanne

Personal Growth

How to Feel

By Suzanne E. Harrill

An important part of inner strength is experiencing our feelings. In my life-long learning I have found the importance of practicing mindfulness as often as I can to notice what is going on within. I am learning to accept the reality of the moment as perfect for the expansion of my awareness and personal growth, and to not ignore what I am feeling. It is quite a big lesson to learn to go with the flow and not resist the reality of present situations as life unfolds in our day to day life. Of course it is easy when the lessons are joyful, fun, and life goes better than we planned...

Spiritual Growth

What You Think Is What You Create!

by Jane Schreiner

Your "brain on happiness" is the whole story in being happy. As you smile, as you jump up and down, as you visualize your intention for the day, you are sending the message to your brain that you are happy. Your brain then produces dopamine, which floods your system telling your body to thrive, that all is well. And so the loop of positive messages begins and continues, as you "think it and make it so." Happiness, well being, feeling good, uplifting your spirits, it all starts with your brain.

And the language of the brain is words, so choose yours well. What you think, when you speak, as you listen, all of those words directly impact your brain, your thoughts and perceptions...

Awareness of The Dance

By Ann Alexander

Hanging on the wall above my computer and desk, is a treasured antique Chinese architectural piece that I have enjoyed living with for years.  I have always liked it immensely, choosing it through moves and radical downsizing;  but lately it has been truly speaking to me.

My plan was to go from I-10 through the downtown freeway exchange and onto I-45 south.  First, I gave thanks for air-conditioning as we all tried to move along on the veins of concrete.  Then I noticed I wasn’t getting upset but was just looking at the beautiful clouds, listening to a Suite by Ravel on classical radio, feeling how strong my body felt in the car seat, noticing a tattoo of stars I got on my right wrist nine years ago, enjoying the color and texture of a red lizard watchband on the left wrist, and realizing the presence of life in my body and all around.  Chaos was not coming to me from the outside chaos.  It was not personal; life was just happening...

The Peace of Joy

by Georgia Woodworth RScP

Riann Wilson, best known for playing Dwight Schrute on, The Office, wrote a book on answering Life's big questions called Soul Pancake.  However, Soul Pancake is actually a movement started by Riann and a few friends. One of their activities involved a huge mockup of a polaroid camera.  As people passed by, they were invited to express their joy.  If they accepted, they were photographed and the images were shared. It quickly became clear that being happy and smiling is contagious. There is also the yoga practice of laughing as the path to enlightenment.  How could anyone laughing with such relish and abandonment possibly avoid peace and joy?
